Many times we tend to snub some aspects, tenets and traditions of our beloved religion either due to our ignorance or unabated negligence. With our ensuing indolence we miss the most crucial yet basic foundations of our faith which includes following the Sunnah of the messenger of Allah (PBUH) in letter and spirit.

Imaam malik said:

“The Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH)  is like Ark of Noah, whoever embarks upon it reaches salvation and whoever rejects it will drown.”

One important Sunnah is the one of sleeping on your right side as you retire to bed. It is very important that a Muslim abides by this important bedtime prophetic routine that is also backed by modern science.

Sleeping on your right, especially in the early stage of sleep, is highly recommended. Studies have shown that the heart is at its best when one sleeps on the right lateral position. Sleeping on the right can lower blood pressure and heart rate, hence indeed be good for those with heart concerns.

However, in order to gain maximum spiritual and physical advantage out of this Sunnah, one must do it correctly and strictly as taught by the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). As recorded in several authentic traditions, when the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) wanted to sleep, he put his hand under his right cheek and said:

“O Allah, protect me from your punishment on the day you raise up your slaves”

Sleep Correctly

Sleep horizontally, your hand under your right cheek, your legs on top of each other and do your daily regimen of nighttime adhkaars.  Remember to avoid folding your legs unless it is necessary to do so and in case you would like to fold the top leg, let it rest under a pillow so that your vertebral column remains aligned accordingly.
