Wajir’s public transport sector has been thrown into disarray for the second consecutive day as fuel dealers continue to halt operations due to escalating security concerns. The closure of petrol stations has further crippled the county’s already struggling economy, with local residents grappling with severe transport disruptions and soaring fares.

Petrol station owners have expressed growing frustration over a surge in attacks by criminal gangs, particularly targeting their businesses at night. In response, operators have locked their stations to pressure security agencies into taking decisive action against the gangs.

“We are calling upon the county leadership and security leaders to address the situation before things get out of hand,” a fuel dealer, who requested anonymity, told Smart Muslim. “It is only a matter of time before we are forced to shut down completely due to insecurity.”

However, Wajir County Police Commander John Gichohi have reassured the fuel owners that security will be beefed up to address their concern and ensure that fuel dealers will run their business without any more fear.

“We have had several meetings with fuel station owners to assure them of the security of their businesses” Commander Gichohi said “We have since increased security patrols particularly at critical hours of the night and they are so far happy with our actions”

The closure has led to a drastic reduction in the number of vehicles on the roads, with taxi and Tukutuk fares skyrocketing as a result of the fuel shortage. Commuters are now facing an unprecedented transport crisis, with many struggling to afford the increased fares.

Over the past few months, attacks on petrol stations have intensified, raising concerns about the security situation in Wajir. Local business owners are now urging authorities to take effective action before the situation deteriorates further.
