Five Key Kenya Muslim Organizations

Over the years a number of organizations were formed to safeguard and protect the interests of Kenya Muslims in the spirit of promoting peace and harmony. These organizations acted as the voice of the Muslim communities across the country. Some educate and enlighten Muslims about Islamic values while others are engaged in humanitarian activities. A number of organizations were also formed to provide a platform to articulate Muslim grievances.

Supkem
Supkem which stands for Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims brings about the spirit of brotherhood and unity among Muslims in Kenya. It caters for the spiritual social and economic wellbeing of Muslims in Kenya.Supkem is registered as the umbrella body of all Muslim organizations,Societies, mosque committees and groups in Kenya. Supkem was formed in May 1973 following the holding of a general conference in Nairobi.

It was established to carry out and discharge in every possible way the obligations, duties and responsibilities Muslims owe as a Community to Islam and bring about the spirit of brotherhood and unity among Muslims in Kenya.

The Young Muslim Association
The Young Muslim Association (YMA) started on 16th July 1964 as a small charity working solely in Nairobi. Its mission was social welfare and youth awareness work.

YMA has provided humanitarian relief, water, food, education and orphans projects. It engages in efforts of setting up orphanages and outreach programs to support and steadily improve the lives of thousands of children.

Until today YMA is still an orphans-first charity, although they have since gone on to include many different charitable activities in their operations. These includes emergency humanitarian relief, food distribution, long-term water solutions, health provision, education, youth activities, vocational training, shelter, Dawah, Waqf and empowerment projects.

Kenya Muslims Charitable Society
Kenya Muslims Charitable Society (KMCS) is a charitable organization, registered as Non- Governmental Organization (NGO) operating in Kenya. It was registered by the Non-Governmental Organizations Coordination Board as a NGO on 20th January 1994.

KMCS was founded in 1987 by a group of professionals from Northern Kenya in response to growing need for religious, cultural, developmental and humanitarian services to the Muslim community in marginal areas of the country.

The Society deals with educational services, da’wa programmes, health services, water & sanitation activities, humanitarian activities and environmental conservation. The society has its head office in Nairobi and five branches in Mombasa, Garissa, Isiolo, Wajir and Mandera.

The Islamic Foundation Kenya
The Islamic Foundation is an educational, charitable and welfare organization. It is a non-political and non-sectarian body working for the welfare of humanity. Islamic Foundation is well known for educational and social welfare activities in Kenya for the last 42 years.

The Foundation is involved in a wide range of activities ranging from producing and disseminating religious and educational literature to the running of orphanages, establishment of hospitals and clinics, schools, colleges, vocational training centres, youth clubs, libraries and the construction and management of Mosques.

KMYA
The Kenya Muslim Youth Alliance (KMYA) is an independent not for profit national youth network founded in November 2003, with a mandate to empower young Muslims through constructive engagement and participation in nurturing democratic, healthy, peaceful and just societies for all.

KMYA’s goals are accomplished through capacity-building, networking, dialogue, research and communication, health-related programs, information sharing and advocacy.
