As we reflect on the blessed month of Ramadan, let us consider the importance of seeking knowledge and learning for the sake of Allah. Pursuing knowledge is an endless quest and an integral part of our Islamic faith. By opening our hearts to learning and self-improvement, we can draw closer to Allah (The Most High).
The Quran emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding, stating: “Read, ˹O Prophet, ˺ in the Name of your Lord Who created—created humans from a clinging clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, Who taught by the pen—taught humanity what they knew not…” (Quran, 96:1-5).
Seeking the right knowledge can quell worries and anxieties in our minds and hearts, and enable us to become true embodiments of humanity. Knowledge is the power behind our obedience to Allah. It expands our thoughts and prepares us for a life full of satisfaction.
Through knowledge, we can rediscover our strength and improve our ranks in front of Allah. Seeking the right knowledge is essential, as it can help us uncover hidden strengths and opportunities that transcend our wildest imaginations.
Even highly knowledgeable people continue to strive to learn more, and knowledge is an endless life process. Learning can also involve unlearning things that no longer serve us. One example of this is Imam Ghazali (rh), who retreated to a Masjid for twelve years, two of which he spent sweeping the Masjid, transforming himself from a knowledgeable philosopher to a humble believer.
During this period, Imam Ghazali wrote his masterpiece ‘Ihya,’ which is highly regarded within Islamic knowledge circles. This illustrates how knowledge can expose our human vulnerability amid abundant knowledge, and why we must always remain humble and open to improve ourselves.
True Secrets
The true secrets of this life (and the next) are locked within a pen, and many consider life itself an endless journey of knowledge. In this digital age, there are several ways to gain knowledge of Islam.
Reading the magnificent Quran with understanding, reflecting on its teachings, and seeking guidance from Islamic scholars are all excellent ways to learn. Attending Islamic classes, conferences, and seminars, as well as joining Islamic discussion groups, can also help us seek knowledge and connect with other like-minded individuals.
As Muslims, our purpose in learning is to be honorable believers who differentiate right from wrong and halal from haram. We should always seek Allah’s pleasure in all that we do, even when we are learning something for personal benefit. When we approach learning to gain knowledge that will benefit us in this life, we should also be mindful that our efforts are ultimately for the sake of Allah.
When we intend to please Allah, even our personal pursuits can become acts of worship. Our intention should be to use the knowledge gained to better ourselves and those around us, to make a positive impact in the world, and to draw closer to Allah. When we make an effort to seek knowledge with the right intention, we can be sure that Allah will bless our efforts and grant us success in this life and the hereafter.
In conclusion, let us all strive to learn and study for the sake of Allah, whether it’s through reading books, attending lectures, or taking courses. Seeking knowledge is a lifelong journey, and there is always something new to learn. So let us never stop seeking knowledge and never give up on the pursuit of understanding Allah’s beautiful religion. May Allah guide us all and grant us success in our efforts to seek knowledge for His sake. Ameen.
