ByMadura McCormack-QUEENSLAND’S first camel dairy is milking a new line – tourism.

QCamel’s 1000ha dairy at Bells Creek, west of Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, became an accredited producer in 2014, and the popularity of camel milk already has seen its herd grow to 70.

Managing director Lauren Brisbane said the dairy’s camel milk, which costs $25 to $32 a litre, sold out every week. The milk is often referred to as white gold.

Ms Brisbane said the milk’s popularity was rising “enormously” and the dairy was taking advantage of opportunities in the Sunshine Coast’s burgeoning food tourism industry.

Once a month, she runs a Camels and Canapes tour to educate consumers about camels, while they dine on camel milk-based food.

The adventurous menu includes camel milk gelato, camel milk tzatziki and camel milk panna cotta.

“It’s about people coming to find out a bit more about camels, to come up close and personal for a kiss and a cuddle,” Ms Brisbane said.

“Our camels are really gentle and friendly.”
